How to Apply for an Academic ID in Greece

September 6, 2024

By now you might have received more than one email about how important it is to get your student ID, and, well, it actually is! Not only will it be necessary to show at your exams and even labs occasionally, but it is also your golden ticket to any kind of student discount, not just in Greece, but across Europe. It is required to get the student discount for buses, flights, museum entry, and anything in between. So, what does this process look like?

Information to Collect Before Submitting the Application:

  • Your address in Thessaloniki which should match the school records as well as your legal documents
  • Your registration number (given to you on that slip of paper by the school secretary when you register)
  • Your social security number (AMKA) if you have one
  • A recent, color photo of you meeting the following criteria (this will be printed on the card):
    • Neutral background
    • Clearly depicts only your face
    • Dimensions should be at least 240 x 240 pixels
    • The type of photo file must be .jpg
    • The size of the photo should not exceed 2MB

Application Process:

After finalizing your registration with the school, you should apply for an Academic ID. To do that you go to https://academicid.minedu.gov.gr/. You can switch to English by clicking the flag (top right of the page). Next, click “Registration/Login” in the top right corner.

Select “UnderGraduate Student”. From the dropdown menu, choose “Aristotle University of Thessaloniki” and press login.

You login using the username and password you have for your academic email for AUSoM.

You will have to verify your email address, and an email will be sent with a link to continue the process. All of the emails sent to you about your ID will start with the subject [MINEDU - ACADEMIC ID].

Then, just fill out the application. You will have to choose the store where you want to pick the card up. You can look up the addresses on Google Maps in comparison to your apartment or to school so that you can get it from a location convenient to you.

You will receive an email when the application is submitted, which will look like this:

Application Approval and Picking Up ID:

I submitted the application on the 29th of September, and received an email on the 2nd of October that my application had been approved. However, depending on when you send in the application and the time period, it may take a few days, so don’t stress. This email will look almost identical to the submission one. I also received a text message informing me.

Then, on the 11th of October I received another email (and SMS) about my ID being ready for pick up:

So, make sure that you check the hours of operation of your distribution site, and then make your way there whenever you can to pick up your ID.

Make sure you have these things with you to pick up your ID!

  • Your ID/passport
  • Your submission code that you received in the first email upon submission

If you face any problems you can reach out to a member of the IMSoG board or go to the school secretary’s office and we will do it together.
